It was the dreaded week of group projects. Everyone's least favorite time of the semester. And, as expected, the MC was assigned to a group with—who else?—Julian, Milo, Luca, and Lila.
"Alright, team!" Julian declared dramatically, standing at the front of the classroom like they were about to address an army. "This project will be a masterpiece. A work of art! A display of our collective brilliance!"
Luca, casually kicking back in their chair, raised an eyebrow. "Or, you know, we could just... get it done. Without the theatrics."
But Julian ignored them, of course. "We shall dominate this project. We shall shine! I have already planned our presentation—complete with music, lighting, and—"
"No," Milo interjected, their glasses slipping down their nose as they scribbled something in a notebook. "I've already researched the topic. It's a simple history project, and it requires factual information, not... whatever Julian has in mind."
"I knew you'd say that," Julian retorted with a dramatic sigh, clearly offended. "Fine, let's compromise. A factual project... with artistic flair."
The MC, already preparing for chaos, scribbled in their notebook:
"This is going to be a disaster. I can already feel it."
Lila, ever the peacemaker, smiled and patted the MC on the shoulder. "We'll figure it out. We always do."
The first planning session was an absolute mess. Julian had brought in a portable speaker, which was promptly blasting dramatic movie scores, while Milo was trying to explain the facts about the historical figure they were supposed to present on.
"Did you know that Cleopatra was a genius strategist? She spoke several languages, including Ethiopian," Milo explained excitedly, flipping through pages of a history book.
Julian, however, was busy sketching dramatic interpretations of Cleopatra, complete with a golden crown and flowing cape. "Here, I've already got our opening scene. Dramatic entrance with smoke machines—wait, do you think the teacher will let us use smoke machines?"
Luca rolled their eyes. "You're not bringing smoke machines to school. Also, I'm in charge of snacks."
"What snacks?" the MC quickly scribbled.
Luca winked. "We're gonna need energy for this performance."
The rest of the meeting descended into madness as Julian argued over the presentation's creative direction, Milo insisted on including as many facts as possible, and Luca scrolled through their phone for snack ideas. Meanwhile, the MC, unsure how they'd survived this much, wrote:
"I'm not even sure what the project is about anymore."
Finally, the day of the presentation arrived. They were supposed to be presenting on Cleopatra's reign, but... well, let's just say their version was unique.
The lights dimmed. The music started. Julian, in full costume, marched to the front of the room, dramatically declaring, "Behold! The Queen of Egypt! Her Majesty, Cleopatra!"
Milo was at the podium, trying to read from their notes, but the combination of Julian's exaggerated performance and Luca's sudden snack-crunching in the back had everyone distracted.
The MC, silently observing the chaos, scribbled:
"This is a nightmare... but it's kind of amazing."
Lila, who had somehow managed to stay calm throughout the entire ordeal, chimed in with some surprisingly insightful facts, attempting to bring balance to the chaos. "Cleopatra was not just a queen, but a powerful political figure who..."
But then Luca, holding a bag of chips, interrupted. "Did you know that Cleopatra was also really good at throwing a party? Snack goals, am I right?"
The class burst into laughter. Even the teacher couldn't help but chuckle.
By the time they wrapped up the presentation, the project was half facts, half absurd drama, and 100% chaos. But somehow, they'd done it. And despite everything, the teacher actually gave them a decent grade.
As they walked out of class, Lila sighed in relief. "Well, we survived. Just barely."
The MC wrote:
"Surviving might be an understatement."
Julian, still in character, twirled dramatically. "I told you we'd shine. It was a masterpiece."
Luca, munching on yet another snack, nodded. "Yeah, we definitely shone. Like a firework. A little messy, but spectacular."
The MC scribbled one final note:
"A masterpiece... or a disaster. Either way, it was unforgettable."
