Chiyo's mind was reeling.
Having lived through countless battles and losses, she believed there was little left in the world that could shock her. The whereabouts of the Third Kazekage and the actions of her grandson, Sasori, were among the rare exceptions.
When she heard Sasori had participated in the kidnapping of Gaara, the Kazekage, her resolve hardened. She was prepared to do anything—even sacrifice her life—to prevent Sasori from further atrocities.
But events had unfolded far differently than she had imagined. Sasori, her once-beloved grandson, had been utterly defeated. Worse, he was subdued not by her hand, but by a young shinobi from Konoha, Kirito. His puppets—treasured creations—were taken by force, leaving her both stunned and sympathetic to Sasori's fate.
Chiyo stared at Sasori's core in her hands. The words she wanted to say caught in her throat as she struggled to reconcile the memory of her grandson with the inhuman form he had become.
Behind her, Kirito was calmly healing Gaara with a power Chiyo couldn't comprehend. Watching the display, Chiyo felt a deep realization: the world had moved far beyond her time.
As the group began their journey to regroup with Kakashi's team, Chiyo reflected on her earlier encounters with Konoha's shinobi. She recalled how Sakura had extracted poison from Kankuro's body after his battle with Sasori. At the time, Chiyo had been awed by Sakura's medical prowess, only to learn that Sakura considered it "basic" compared to her senior brother.
Now, having witnessed Kirito's abilities firsthand—his mastery of medical ninjutsu and his overwhelming combat skill—Chiyo's admiration deepened.
"I envy Tsunade," Chiyo murmured to herself. "Konoha truly has no shortage of talent."
Despite Kirito's effortless victory over Sasori, Chiyo couldn't ignore the harsh truth: Gaara had still been captured, and the tailed beast forcibly extracted. The gap between Konoha and the struggling Sand Village had never been more apparent.
Meanwhile, Kirito sealed Sasori's puppets into scrolls with practiced efficiency. The scorpion puppet now carried Gaara on its back, Sakura followed behind, and Chiyo carried Sasori's core.
Through his Byakugan, Kirito observed Deidara retreating on his clay bird. Deidara had tried to delay Kakashi and the others, but his plan failed. With TenTen's precise attacks and the group's coordinated defense, Deidara was forced to retreat.
Soon, Kirito's group converged with Kakashi's team.
"Where's Gaara? Is he okay?" Naruto rushed forward, skipping any greetings.
Sakura pointed to the scorpion puppet carrying Gaara. "He's safe. He just needs time to recover," she reassured him.
Naruto exhaled in relief. "Thank goodness!"
Kirito raised an eyebrow. "Naruto, when did you and Gaara become such close friends?"
Naruto scratched his head, slightly embarrassed. "It's not like that! When I visited the Sand Village, I got to know Gaara. Despite everything he's been through, he believed in me, and we became friends."
He clenched his fists. "Gaara worked so hard to gain the villagers' trust and became Kazekage before me. I won't let him die like this!"
Kirito nodded, piecing together their bond. Gaara and Naruto had found common ground in their shared experiences, making their friendship deeply meaningful to Naruto, who had few close friends.
Sakura leaned in and whispered to Kirito, "Did you know? Naruto and Gaara once had a fight in the guard station."
Kirito raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"Ah!" Naruto overheard and waved his hands defensively. "That was different! Gaara wasn't willing to listen at first, so we... worked it out!"
"So, you're admitting you got beaten into shape?" Sakura teased.
"No way! Sakura, believe me!" Naruto protested, his tone lighthearted now that Gaara was safe.
As the group settled, Kakashi approached Kirito quietly.
"You used that technique, didn't you?" Kakashi asked. "Jinchuriki usually don't survive after losing their tailed beasts. But Gaara is alive."
Kirito nodded. "I figured it was worth it. Naruto cares deeply for Gaara. Letting him die wasn't an option."
"You made the right call," Kakashi said, lowering his voice. "But be cautious. Abilities like yours will draw unwanted attention if overexposed."
Kirito understood Kakashi's concerns. As a highly-skilled shinobi, Kakashi knew the dangers of becoming a target. Kirito's capabilities—bordering on miraculous—were sure to attract the wrong kind of interest.
"I'll be careful," Kirito assured him. "I'll only use it when necessary."
With Gaara safe and Deidara in retreat, the team began their journey back, a sense of quiet victory settling over the group.
