Skylar's POV

The room was suffocatingly quiet, apart from the soft hum of the computer as Julian worked to decrypt the last files. My stomach churned with unease; every second felt like a lifetime. I stared at the monitor, watching the progress bar inch forward, my breath shallow and shaky.

"You alright?" Julian's voice pulled me from my spiral.

"Yeah, just peachy," I said, forcing a weak laugh. My fingers tapped nervously against the table, but I couldn't stop. "I mean, what's a little life-altering truth after everything, right?"

Julian frowned, his eyes scanning my face like he was searching for a crack in my armor. "Sky, you don't have to—"

"I do, Julian," I cut in, sharper than I intended. "I need to know what's in there. I need to understand why someone I trusted would... would do this."
