Chapter 30: Rising Shadows and Lingering Tension
---
A Tense Aftermath
The crowd's cheers slowly died down as Elara stepped back, her eyes locked on Kai. Her sharp amber gaze had lost none of its intensity, but now, there was a flicker of something new — respect.
"Looks like the Warden of Shadows lives up to his name," Elara said, brushing dust from her cloak. Her Moonshadow Panther padded up beside her, its yellow eyes staring cautiously at Selene.
Kai crossed his arms, his gaze steady. "Names are just names. Actions define them."
Her eyes narrowed, her lips curling into a small grin. "Careful, Warden. People might start expecting more from you."
"I can handle it," Kai replied calmly, his eyes flicking toward the onlookers. He could already feel the weight of their gazes, some filled with admiration, others with jealousy or wariness.
Ryo clapped his hands loudly, breaking the tension. "That was insane! The Warden versus the Bloodmoon Prodigy — I'd pay to see that again!" He grinned wide, glancing at Kai. "But don't think you're done with me. I'm coming for you next."
"Line up, Ryo," Nyx said from her seated position, her eyes sharp like a predator. "There's no shortage of rivals for him now."
The gathered soldiers and tamers slowly dispersed, still murmuring about the battle. Words like "genius" and "monster" echoed among them.

A Private Exchange
Later that day, Kai sat near the edge of the camp, gazing toward the distant forest where the Beast Tide would emerge. Selene hung above him, her silk threads swaying in the breeze like tiny strands of fate. Yami sat cross-legged beside him, lazily flicking pebbles at nothing in particular, while Nyx leaned against a tree, her eyes closed but her presence as sharp as ever.
"She'll come," Yami muttered, her eyes flicking to the side. "Elara isn't the type to leave things unfinished."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "She's stubborn, I'll give her that."
"Stubborn people are often the most dangerous," Nyx added without opening her eyes. Her voice was calm but firm, like a warning. "They don't know when to quit."
As if summoned, a familiar presence approached. Elara Bloodmoon emerged from the trees, her steps light but deliberate. Her Panther was gone, likely dismissed to its realm.
Kai didn't move, his eyes still on the forest ahead. "You're persistent."
Elara leaned against a nearby tree, her arms crossed. "And you're cautious. Makes sense, given your title." She glanced at Selene, who remained eerily still, her many eyes watching without blinking. "That spider of yours... I underestimated her."
"Most people do," Kai replied, glancing up at Selene. Her threads shimmered faintly, responding to his gaze. "But that's how spiders work. They stay hidden until it's too late."
Silence lingered for a moment, the faint rustle of leaves filling the void.
"I'm not here to fight," Elara said finally. "Not this time."
"Then what do you want?" Kai asked, still gazing at the distant forest.
Elara stepped closer, her eyes sharp but calm. "Information. About you."
Yami's grin widened, her golden eyes glinting. "Curiosity can be dangerous, Bloodmoon."
Elara's eyes shifted to Yami, her gaze unwavering. "I'm willing to take that risk."
Nyx finally opened her eyes, a flicker of silver light flashing through them. "Bold words. But be careful. The more you know, the more you owe."
Kai raised a hand, silencing them. He finally turned to face Elara, his expression unreadable. "What do you want to know?"
"Why do you hide your strength?" she asked bluntly, her amber eyes piercing. "You're stronger than you let on. You controlled that entire battle from the start. I want to know why you pretend to be weaker than you are."
Kai's eyes darkened slightly. His voice was low but firm. "Why do you think I owe you that answer?"
Her eyes didn't waver. "Because I see you. People like us—those who stand out—don't get the luxury of being 'low-key.' You think hiding will keep you safe, but it won't." Her gaze softened slightly. "If anything, it makes you a bigger target."
Yami tilted her head, looking at Elara with newfound interest. "Not bad. She sees through you, Master."
"Not entirely," Kai muttered. He stood up, his shadow stretching unnaturally long behind him. "I'm not hiding to stay safe. I'm hiding because it's easier to watch from the shadows than to stand in the light."
Elara's eyes widened slightly. "That's… one way to look at it."
Kai turned to face her fully now, his eyes sharp as a blade. "If you want to know more, you'll have to earn it."
Her grin returned, full of challenge. "I plan to."

The Call to Arms
The next morning, the atmosphere in the camp shifted. Horns blared, loud and urgent. Soldiers scrambled to their positions, and tamers summoned their beasts. The ground trembled beneath them.
"The Beast Tide," Nyx said, her voice colder than usual. She opened her eyes, her golden gaze scanning the horizon. "They're coming."
Yami's grin returned, her golden eyes glowing with excitement. "Finally. I was starting to get bored."
Ryo rushed toward Kai, his swords already drawn. "You ready, Warden? It's about to get wild."
"I'm always ready," Kai replied, his voice calm but his eyes sharp. "Selene, Yami, Nyx — stay sharp."
"Understood, Master," Selene's voice echoed softly in his mind. She dropped from the tree, her legs tapping the ground lightly, her presence now fully in the open.
Yami stretched her arms, cracking her knuckles. Her eyes locked onto the distant treeline. "Let's see how many survive the first wave."
Nyx shifted into a more upright stance, her silver hair flowing behind her. Her presence grew heavier, as if a storm had just arrived. "They won't survive long."
The ground shook harder. Shadows moved in the distance. The low growls and roars of beasts echoed through the forest. Birds fled from the trees.
The first beast emerged. A hulking, four-legged monstrosity with bone-plated armor on its back and glowing red eyes. Its roar shattered the air like a thunderclap.
The soldiers braced themselves, eyes wide with fear. Some gripped their weapons tighter, their hands trembling.
"Stay calm!" barked a commander. "Hold the line!"
Elara appeared beside Kai, her Moonshadow Panther now at her side, its eyes glowing with eerie light. Her gaze met his briefly.
"Don't die on me, Warden," she said, her grin sharp like a blade.
Kai's eyes glowed faintly with power. "Same to you, Bloodmoon."
The horde charged.
Dozens of beasts. Then hundreds.
The ground quaked beneath their stampede. Shadows stretched long across the battlefield, and the air grew thick with the wild roar of the tide.
Kai raised his hand, his aura surging. The shadows beneath him shifted unnaturally, growing larger and darker.
"Yami," he called.
"Already on it," she replied, stepping forward. Her form shifted. Her human body dissolved into black mist, reforming as a colossal, multi-headed serpent — Yamata no Orochi. Her eight heads hissed, their eyes glowing like twin suns.
Selene scurried forward, her silk threads dancing like blades of light. Her web spread across the battlefield, each thread a trap waiting to be sprung. Her silent precision was deadly.
"Nyx," Kai said next.
She didn't reply with words. Instead, the glow of silver light surrounded her. Her form shimmered, her eyes burning brighter than ever. She stepped forward with regal grace, her gaze cold and predatory.
The soldiers stared in awe. "What… what is that?" one of them muttered.
"Focus!" the commander shouted.
Kai took one step forward. His gaze was steady. His aura stretched behind him like the shadow of a beast far larger than any in the horde.
"Charge," Kai said calmly.
The soldiers hesitated for only a moment before following.
The Warden of Shadows moved first.
Selene's webs caught the first beast. Yami's heads tore apart the second. Nyx's silver light consumed the third.
The Beast Tide had begun.
