A sudden noise interrupts our conversation.
A creak.
The front door.
I jump to my feet.
Mila does the same.
— Stay here, Mrs. Valenti.
She moves slowly toward the hallway.
I follow her despite myself.
The floor creaks under her steps.
Mila approaches the door, reaches for the handle.
I hold my breath.
Suddenly, the lock turns sharply.
The door opens with a metallic screech.
A man enters.
Tall. Dressed in black. A cap pulled low over his forehead.
He closes the door behind him and locks it.
Mila instinctively steps back.
— Who are you? she asks, her voice tense.
The man doesn't answer.
His gaze lands on me.
Then on Leo, in my arms.
I clutch my son tightly.
Mila steps between us.
— Get out of here.
The man smirks.
— I'm already here.
He steps forward.
