Though the Kingdom of Northwind's palace lacked the refined grandeur of The Kingdom of Ravenwell, it was far livelier. Even in the most remote corners of the palace, the noise was inescapable.
Inside her quarters, Victoria Ashwood sat near the door, watching as some Northwind princes and princesses raised a ruckus outside, trailed by a horde of palace maids and attendants.
One of the princesses, curious about Victoria, pointed at her upon catching up with her own maid. "Who is that? Did Father bring in a new consort?"
The maid gave Victoria a brief look, eyes brimming with contempt, then quietly led the little princess away.
Victoria was too sensitive not to catch that scornful glance, and she'd seen it countless times before. Balling her fists, she rose and went back inside.
