Chapter 103: Beatrice Byrd

A fierce wind whistled outside. Lina Riley shut the window, noticing in the moment before closing it that the streets were crawling with patrolmen, each holding a torch and aggressively shooing any stragglers. One soldier even glanced up, barked, "What're you staring at? Shut the window!"

With the situation unclear, Lina chose not to pick a fight, obligingly fastening the shutters. Left alone in her empty room, she sighed.

"Knock, knock! You in there?"

Beatrice Byrd's voice. Lina opened the door to find her visibly drained. Stepping aside, she let Beatrice enter, and they both sat at the table. The gale rattled the window frame, its pitch rising like ghostly lamentations. Lina poured a cup of hot tea for Beatrice, noting the dark circles under her eyes. "You haven't slept well, have you?"
