Amid the tense situation, Ivy Dawson tried her best to hold back her sobs. Lina Riley never imagined anything would happen to Beatrice Byrd. No wonder, she thought, recalling how Beatrice had kept rubbing her temples earlier that evening.
It took Lina quite a while to chase after her, lugging along a frightened Ivy. In any other place, Beatrice could have fled even faster, but the rough terrain snagged her clothing, leaving Lina at least some chance to find her.
Ivy was still stifling sobs—quiet but with tears rolling down her cheeks. She glanced at Lina, gulping tears. "We should look near water."
Lina was hacking through some prickly shrubs, trying to appear calm. "Why there?"
Almost choking, Ivy explained in a tiny voice, "My mom always babbles about wanting to die near water."
A surge of pain struck Lina's heart. Gently stroking Ivy's hair, she murmured over and over, "It'll be all right. We'll find her."
