The search for the ring had plunged the entire class into chaos. While every team scattered across the school grounds, meticulously combing through every possible hiding spot, something was off about Team 4 and Team 5. Their movements were unnatural, too coordinated almost as if they weren't searching at all.
Aaron, sharp-eyed as ever, caught on quickly. At first, he brushed it off as an alliance maybe they had accepted that winning outright was impossible and decided to split the 18 points among themselves. A strategic move, but one that still wouldn't secure them the top spot against Nathaniel's team.
Yet, things took a more sinister turn when Aaron found himself near the sports room.
Hidden behind a cluster of benches, he spotted them the leaders of Team 4 and Team 5: Elian Crowford and Sylara Faye. But they weren't alone. Two other figures stood beside them, their faces just out of sight. The voices, however, sent a chill down Aaron's spine.
He recognized them.
A boy and a girl.
As they stepped into the dim light, Aaron's breath hitched.
Lucian Everhart. The Primary Section Student Council President himself. And by his side his ever-loyal assistant, Veronica Alden.
Aaron's heartbeat thundered in his ear's. Why are they here?
He remained still, barely daring to breathe as their hushed voices echoed through the empty hall. It was clear now Lucian wasn't just spectating. He was pulling the strings.
As the conversation wrapped up, Lucian and Veronica exited first, their footsteps calm, collected like they had already won. Elian and Sylara followed soon after, determination burning in their eyes.
Aaron waited a few seconds before slipping out of his hiding spot. His throat was dry. His mind raced.
The Monologue of Realization
Back in the classroom, Aaron took a long sip of water, gripping his bottle so tightly his knuckles turned white. His mind was a battlefield of questions and theories, each one more troubling than the last.
"Lucian and his assistant are directly involving themselves in our competition? Why? What could they possibly gain? Even if Team 4 and Team 5 secure the 18 points, they still wouldn't win outright. The best they could do is distribute the points and break into the top three."
"But what if that's not the point?"
Aaron's fingers tightened around the bottle.
"Wait… Lucian isn't just after the competition. He's after the class itself."
The realization hit him like a freight train.
Lucian already held the most powerful position in the Primary Section, but power alone wasn't enough. He wanted control. Influence.
And to ensure Veronica became his successor, he needed to cement his grip on the next generation of top students Nathaniel, Sophia, Elara… maybe even Aaron himself.
"If he can secure their loyalty now, then by the time he runs for high-school student council president next year , he'll be unstoppable."
Aaron exhaled sharply.
"He's playing the long game. And I just walked right into it."
Time was slipping away. It was already 12 PM. Only three and a half hours left before the competition ended.
He had to act.
The Turning Point
A thought struck him like lightning. There was only one person who could help him now.
Without hesitation, Aaron sprinted across the school grounds, heading straight for a secluded storage room near the back of the building a place few students ever visited.
Sitting near the door, eating his lunch in peace, was none other than Zephyr Kael, Selene Ashford's enigmatic partner from the Student Council.
Aaron steadied his breath before approaching.
Zephyr didn't even glance up. Instead, with a knowing smirk, he muttered,
"Selene was right. You'd come to me one day."
Aaron tensed. "Yeah, well… I need to speak with her. Now."
Zephyr nodded. "Give me five minutes."
An Unlikely Alliance
Five minutes later, Selene Ashford stood before him, arms crossed, amusement flickering in her violet eyes.
"Well, well. Look who finally came running to me."
Aaron, still catching his breath, shot her an annoyed glare. "This isn't a social visit. I need answers."
Selene's smirk faded. She could see the seriousness in his eyes. "Go on."
Aaron's voice was firm. "Lucian and Veronica were meeting with the leaders of Team 4 and 5. They're working together. And I need to know why."
Selene sighed. "So the rumors were true."
Aaron's eyes narrowed. "What rumors?"
Zephyr was the one who answered.
"Lucian wants complete control over Class 1. He's handpicking students to bring into his circle. That way, when Veronica runs for Student Council President, she'll already have an army of supporters. And when Lucian himself goes for reelection, he'll be untouchable."
Aaron clenched his jaw. "But why our class? Why now?"
Selene's gaze sharpened. "Because this competition is changing the hierarchy. Nathaniel is the frontrunner. If the ring isn't found, he wins. That means he becomes the class's undisputed ace. Lucian can't afford that."
Aaron exhaled. "So he's trying to control the outcome make sure those 18 points go where he wants them to."
Selene nodded. "And he'll use those points as leverage. Probably to sway someone from the top teams into his pocket."
Aaron's mind whirled. "That means… even if I find the ring, Lucian will still try to buy us off."
Selene smirked. "Exactly."
As she turned to leave, she hesitated for a moment before giving him one final hint.
"Go to the back of the school. There's a small field. He goes there every day to smoke after basketball practice. He's kept it a secret for a long time… but I found out."
The Discovery
Aaron sprinted to the back field, his heart hammering in his chest.
The moment he stepped onto the grass, he saw it.
Something glinting in the sunlight.
At the far end of the field.
The ring.
His breath caught. His footsteps slowed.
He reached down, fingers brushing against the smooth, cold metal.
He had won.
Or had he?
His mind spiraled.
"I used Selene's intel. A Student Council member from another class helped me. Would this be considered cheating? No this is about stopping Lucian. But… is this really my fight?"
The weight of choice pressed down on him.
The Final Decision
3:00 PM.
The class gathered before Coach Wilder.
His voice rang out. "Has anyone found the ring?"
Silence.
Eyes darted around. Waiting. Watching.
Aaron's fingers curled around the ring inside his pocket. The cold metal felt heavy like a brand against his palm.
He had it. He had already won.
But something was wrong.
Why was his heart racing? Why did it feel like the moment he pulled the ring out, something would change forever?
Two choices.
One path led to silence blending into the background. Avoiding the spotlight. Avoiding Lucian's gaze.
The other?
Step forward. Be seen. Be known. Be marked.
His pulse thundered in his ears.
He was scared and worried at the start then....
Something inside him stirred. Not fear. Not doubt.
Something else.
And suddenly everything went blank around him....
