Chapter 15

The tension-filled night air pressed like an unseen burden against my skin. With the sound of blood rushing in my ears, I hunkered down behind a clump of thick ferns, my breath coming out in short, ragged gasps. At the first sign of danger, every muscle in my body was stiff and coiled, ready to go into action. I couldn't risk getting caught. Never again.

Around me, the woodland sprang to life as shadows moved in the crescent moon's dim light. Somewhere above, I could hear the snap of twigs, the rustle of leaves, and the eerie cry of an owl.

Most of all, though, I could hear him-Alpha Neon-his voice resonating through the trees, a siren's song that made me want to turn around.

"Nixie!" He spoke in a loud, authoritative voice that was tinged with annoyance and another emotion I dared not mention.

"You can't continue to hide from me."
