Chapter 16

Around me, the wind howled in a savage symphony that made my skin tingle.

My breath came in short gasps as I leaned my back against the ragged rock structure behind me. In the dark woodland beyond, shadows moved, but I couldn't determine if they were mental tricks or actual dangers approaching.

My heart pounded so loudly that the wind was muffled. I couldn't recall the last time I'd felt so helpless and trapped. The wilderness provided cover but also surrounded me, acting as both an ally and an opponent.

In addition to the metallic tang of my apprehension, the air was heavy with the smell of damp dirt and pine.

The wolves were out there. Untamed, hungry, and wild. It's something wilder and older than group wolves. Predators who would savagely gnaw on my flesh without hesitation.
