Chapter 46: Kael’s Warning
Anita stood at her locker, trying to focus on the mundane act of switching out her textbooks. But her hands trembled. She could feel his presence before he spoke—an icy sensation crawling up her spine.
“Such fragile determination,” came Kael’s smooth, mocking voice.
She turned slowly, her heart pounding. Kael leaned casually against the lockers, his piercing gaze locked on her. His facade of friendliness from earlier was gone, replaced by a predatory intensity.
“Kael,” Anita said, trying to keep her voice steady. “Enjoying your role as guest teacher?”
Kael smirked. “Oh, immensely. It’s fascinating, watching you stumble around, trying to piece everything together. But I thought it was time for a... personal chat.”
Before Anita could respond, Jace appeared at her side, his golden eyes blazing with fury. “Back off, Kael.”
Kael chuckled, unbothered. “Ah, Jace. Still playing the noble protector, are we? How quaint.”
