Chapter 49: The Shadow Grows

The school day had started out routine—at least as routine as it could be for Anita these days. But by lunch, the sky outside had turned an ominous shade of gray, casting the campus in eerie twilight. Anita couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong, and when Jace tensed beside her in class, she knew her instincts were right.

“Do you feel that?” Jace whispered, his voice low enough that only Anita could hear.

Anita nodded, her hand unconsciously brushing over her wrist where the fox bead’s mark had started to warm. “What is it?”

“Shadows,” Jace replied grimly. “Kael’s testing you.”

Before Anita could ask what he meant, a scream echoed down the hallway. The classroom erupted into chaos as students rushed to the windows, gasping at the sight of dark, writhing figures moving through the school grounds.

Jace was already out of his seat, grabbing Anita’s arm. “We need to go. Now.”
