Chapter 55: An Unlikely Partner
Anita and Jace stood in the empty auditorium after rehearsal, their voices low but intense.
“The fox bead’s energy is growing,” Jace said, pacing back and forth. “It’s only a matter of time before Kael makes his next move.”
Anita crossed her arms. “We’re outnumbered, Jace. We need more help, but who can we trust?”
Unbeknownst to them, Max stood just outside the door, his hand frozen on the handle. He hadn’t intended to eavesdrop, but their hushed voices had piqued his curiosity. Now, he felt like he was hearing a conversation from a fantasy novel.
“Fox bead? Kael? What the hell are they talking about?” Max whispered to himself, his mind racing. Unable to resist, he pushed the door open.
“What’s going on?” Max demanded, stepping into the room. His voice echoed, making Anita and Jace spin around in surprise.
“Max?” Anita’s heart sank. She exchanged a glance with Jace, who narrowed his eyes.
