Chapter 56: The Power of Friendship
Claire cornered Max outside the cafeteria, her arms crossed and a scowl on her face.
“What’s going on, Max?” she demanded, her voice low but firm. “You and Anita have been acting so... off lately. And now you’re suddenly spending all this time together without me?”
Max sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s... complicated, Claire.”
“Try me,” she said, her eyes narrowing. “I’m not stupid, Max. I know something’s up. If you two are in some kind of trouble, I want to help.”
Max hesitated, glancing around to make sure no one was listening. The last thing they needed was for someone else to overhear.
“Okay,” he said finally. “But you’re not going to believe me. Come with me after school, and I’ll explain everything.”
Claire raised an eyebrow, skeptical but intrigued. “This better be good.”
