Chapter 57: A Test of Trust

Jace paced in front of Max and Claire in Anita’s backyard, his arms crossed and a skeptical look on his face.

“If you two are going to be part of this, I need to know you can handle yourselves,” he said, stopping to glare at them. “This isn’t some high school drama. It’s dangerous, and mistakes get people hurt—or worse.”

Claire raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. “We’re not scared.”

“Speak for yourself,” Max muttered under his breath, earning a sharp nudge from Claire.

Anita stepped in, trying to ease the tension. “Jace, they just found out about all of this. Can’t you cut them some slack?”

“No,” Jace said bluntly. “If they’re going to be involved, I need to know they’re not liabilities. So, we’re going to do a little... test.”

“Test?” Max repeated nervously.

Jace smirked. “Don’t worry, science boy. It’s low stakes—relatively speaking.”
