The gymnasium buzzed with excitement. Students and faculty mingled during the school’s annual charity event, an evening of games, music, and performances. Anita tried to lose herself in the crowd, her friends close by. She couldn’t shake the tension in her chest. It had been too quiet lately—too much time since Kael’s last move.

“Relax, Anita,” Claire said, nudging her with a cup of punch. “You’ve been scanning the room like a spy in a bad movie.”

“Just trying to stay alert,” Anita muttered, scanning the gym once more.

Jace stood by the wall, blending into the shadows as he always did. His eyes were sharp, his posture stiff. “She’s right to be on edge,” he said softly when Anita approached. “This kind of calm never lasts.”

Suddenly, the temperature in the gym seemed to drop. The hum of chatter and laughter was replaced by an uneasy silence.
