The moon hung low in the night sky, its glow diffused by a thin veil of clouds. Jace sat on the rooftop of the safe house, his legs dangling over the edge. His usual calm demeanor was absent; instead, his fox ears twitched, betraying his unease.
Below, Anita paced in the small courtyard, her hands moving as if she were in deep conversation with herself. The confrontation with Kael’s lackeys had left her rattled, though she hid it well.
“Come down already,” Anita called out, her voice cutting through the stillness. “You’re not a gargoyle.”
Jace smirked despite himself and leapt down effortlessly, landing beside her. “You’ve got sharp eyes.”
“You’re not exactly subtle,” she shot back, crossing her arms. “You’ve been acting weird since I got back. What’s going on?”
