Anita sat in silence as Jace’s words hung heavy in the air. The Threads still hummed faintly around her, their glow pulsating in rhythm with her heartbeat. She didn’t know what to make of them or the newfound power she’d wielded. But the weight of it all—the hunters, the Threads, and whatever she was supposed to be—pressed on her shoulders like a storm cloud.
Jace stood, his movements fluid but tense. His golden eyes flickered toward the forest, scanning for lingering threats. His tails glowed faintly, and Anita realized they hadn’t fully faded even though the fight was over.
“What’s going on with your tails?” she asked, her voice hoarse.
Jace glanced back at her, his expression guarded. “The fox bead. It’s reacting.”
Anita frowned. “To what? The hunters?”
“To you,” he admitted quietly.
Her stomach twisted. “What do you mean, to me?”
