Chapter 111: The First Step
The forest loomed ahead, its towering trees silhouetted against the moonlit sky. Anita and Jace moved cautiously, the silence between them filled with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant nocturnal calls. Every step felt deliberate, as if the very ground beneath them was waiting to test their resolve.
Anita glanced at Jace, his features illuminated by the faint glow of moonlight. His gaze was fixed forward, his expression unreadable but determined. She knew he was scanning the surroundings for danger, his protective instincts in overdrive.
“Do you think she was right?” Anita asked, breaking the silence.
Jace didn’t look at her. “About the Threads testing you?”
She nodded.
He hesitated before answering, his voice thoughtful. “I think the Threads are neither good nor evil. They’re... neutral. They respond to what’s inside you, your intentions, your fears. They’ll challenge you to face those things.”
