Chapter 130: Whispers in the Dawn
The morning air was crisp as the ruins settled into an eerie silence behind them. The Threads’ light had faded into Anita’s skin, leaving a faint shimmer on her arms. She glanced at Jace, who was staring out over the valley, his tails still visible under the moon’s waning glow.
"Do you think they’ll come after us right away?" Anita asked, breaking the silence.
Jace didn’t turn to her. His ears twitched slightly, picking up on sounds she couldn’t hear. "They’re already looking for us," he said. "The moment you accepted the Threads, it sent a ripple. They’ll feel it, sense it. And they won’t wait long to act."
"‘They’? Who are they?"
Jace turned to her, his golden eyes darkening. "The ones who’ve been waiting for this moment. The ones who want the Threads—not to protect the balance, but to break it. You’re their target now."
Anita swallowed hard. "So what do we do? We can’t just keep running."
