Chapter 134: Into the Unknown
Anita fell as the portal expelled them to new ground they had never witnessed before. The ground dove under her bare feet was powdery like ash, and the air felt thick, or electrified. Everything around them was vague and dark and bright simultaneously, and the rocks in the far distance were sharp and pointed like needles, and the sky above was filled with some motion.
"Where are we?" Anita asked in a powerful voice as she attempted to balance on her left foot.
Looking around warily, Jace stated. “The Heart of the Forest,” he said. "Or what’s left of it.” This place is between life and death; it is not one and it is not the other.”
She could feel the cold steel pressing against her skin, and shivering, Anita tightened her fingers around the handle of her knife. The air around her also felt oppressive, and it seemed to push against her, as if it wanted her to back down.
"Stay close," Jace warned. “The rules we have here are exceptional.”.
