As she held her desk her fingers shook violently and left deep marks on the wood. Her breathing was uneven, shallow. The classroom noises overwhelmed her including students writing with their pens and moving chairs plus staff air conditioning system. Each surrounding sound hit Anita like ocean waves that pushed against her head until she feared she would shatter.
Focus. Stay calm.
But it was getting harder.
The smell of her classmates surrounded her with their body odor and shampoo scents plus a faint touch of cologne. Too much. Too sharp. The discomfort gripped her abdomen and produced an unusual desire to eat. She could not handle the increased sensitivity of her senses because they operated beyond her control.
She tried to hold her breath as her fingers trembled while breathing became difficult.
“Anita?”
The sudden contact with her shoulder made her jump so hard she almost toppled her chair.
