Artemis' POV
The morning was suffocating, the air thick with tension as I clutched Elara to my chest, my heartbeat pounding in my ears. Every step I took felt heavier, the uneven ground beneath my feet reminding me that we were not safe. Not yet.
The sun was coming out, I didn't want to be found in the bushes, my heart raced, I contemplated between going back and running for my baby. I needed to be logical, I needed to protect Elara, I told myself that Aiden was going to be fine, he had no choice but to be fine.
Damian moved in front of me, his tall frame tense, his sharp eyes scanning every shadow between the trees. The forest was dense, the branches stretching out like claws, the only sound accompanying us the rustling of leaves and our own ragged breaths.
I didn't know how long we had been walking. Minutes? Hours? It felt like forever.
