A Mother's Love

Rachel stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the rain outside.

Large raindrops slid down the glass, falling from the high building into an endless abyss below.

Such weather had been common in the city recently. She often stood here when she needed a moment of peace.

"Miss Foster, the temperature drops at night. You should wear a coat."

Gently draping a thick coat over Rachel's shoulders, Mary followed her gaze out the window. "Miss Foster, you often stand here alone, watching outside. Is something on your mind?"

Rachel shook her head, "I just like watching the rain. It makes reality feel peaceful."

Mary sighed softly, "Helen just called to say Mr. Scott won't be coming home tonight."

"Oh."

Mary looked at Rachel, surprised, "Miss Foster, is that all you have to say?"

Rachel didn't turn around, "What's the matter?"

Mary replied, "Mr. Scott hasn't been home for over a week."
