Emma White never anticipated that the person she had just seen driven out of the house would reappear in the Jennings Family garden in less than an hour.
Emma wore a look of obvious astonishment for just a second before her gaze suddenly fell on the middle-aged woman beside her, dressed unmistakably as a nanny, and immediately understood.
This woman must be Scarlett Garrison's biological mother.
A countryside protégé.
Indeed, for someone emerging from the mountains, finding decent work must be a challenge. To be a nanny in a place like this was considered quite respectable.
Isolde Garrison clearly had the same suspicion.
Though inwardly disdainful and amused, her face was full of sympathy and concern.
"Sister, so your family works here. But be careful, this is the Jennings Family, make sure not to touch anything you shouldn't and cause trouble."
The butler leading the way heard this and his expression slightly cracked. He was about to explain when Scarlett Garrison's calm voice sounded,
"No need for concern."
After pausing, her clear almond eyes shifted from behind Isolde to the faint gray shadow almost clinging to her back. Scarlett slightly raised an eyebrow and added,
"If I were you, I'd stay at home properly, instead of wandering around aimlessly."
At home, she had previously made a protective magical artifact, ordinary malevolence wouldn't dare approach casually. But away from there, it was hard to say.
Seeing that her taboo had always been so aggravating even after recognizing a mere nanny as her mom, Emma White's face almost twisted in anger. However, considering the Jennings Family's butler standing nearby, she held it in and turned to advise Isolde,
"Isolde, you're kind-hearted, but it's important to discern who deserves it. There's no point in advising an ingrate who can't tell good from bad."
Turning to the butler, she explained wearily,
"Forgive me, this is a child we once adopted. We didn't expect that after raising her with such difficulty, she would turn her back on us upon finding her biological parents. She was always unruly and clumsy, and while we tolerated her in our home, who knows what trouble she might cause in someone else's."
Emma White looked sincerely worried, though her words implied that keeping such a person might lead to trouble.
The butler listened, secretly alarmed.
Did Mrs. Garrison not know that the person standing before her was our Jennings Family's long-lost eldest daughter?
To slander the young lady in front of a butler, who knows what life the young lady endured in the Garrison Family.
Initially treating the Garrison Family as honored guests due to their raising of the young lady, the butler's attitude cooled instantly.
Emma White assumed the butler's cold demeanor meant he took her words against Scarlett to heart, inwardly scoffing.
She wanted to see this ingrate cast out and see if she dared to show such attitude in the future.
As for yielding the representative position, Emma White believed that with the Jennings Family's backing, there was no need to argue further. It was just a spot, if Isolde wanted it, she'd take it directly.
The nanny remained silent as Emma White and Isolde approached, respecting the Jennings Family's rules to not casually converse with the master's guests.
However, the more she listened to the guest's words, the more off they seemed.
The earlier words seemed to refer to the Jennings Family's newly found eldest daughter.
Oh, my...
The butler, witnessing this, couldn't help but speak up, "Mrs. Garrison, Miss Garrison, you..."
Just as the words left his mouth, another voice came through.
"What happened?"
It was Donovan Jennings, who had just finished making a phone call, speeding up subconsciously upon seeing Scarlett surrounded, arriving swiftly at the group.
The instant Isolde saw Donovan, her eyes almost lit up.
Emma White similarly assessed the young man before her, eyes sweeping over his diamond cufflinks and million-dollar watch, quietly guessing which young master of the Jennings Family this could be.
Upon seeing Donovan, the butler's expression grew slightly solemn, intending to respond, but noticing the young master inquired about the young lady, he remained silent.
Scarlett, unsure whether it was from Donovan's prior defense of her or for another reason, found herself inexplicably complaining,
"Oh, they were just giving me a hard time."
The concise statement plunged the atmosphere into a sudden eerie silence.
Emma White, realizing what had happened, immediately shrieked, "You insolent girl, what nonsense are you spouting?!"
She raised her hand to strike Scarlett.
Donovan, initially amused by his sister's "complaint," watched as Emma White's action instantly cooled his smile.
Yet, before he could react, the pretty little sister had already lifted her hand swiftly, precisely seizing Emma White's raised wrist.
Her unexpected movement startled not just him; Emma White, too, was taken aback, as if not expecting such defiance, instinctively trying to pull back her hand.
Unbeknownst to her, Scarlett's grip, though appearing light, was unyieldingly firm, and Emma White couldn't free herself.
Maintaining her hold, Scarlett coldly eyed Emma White,
"Don't forget, I'm no longer your Garrison Family's daughter, nor will I allow you to strike me at will."
Releasing her hold, Emma White staggered back from her own struggling efforts as Scarlett suddenly let go.
"Mom!"
Isolde exclaimed, quickly reaching to steady the stumbling Emma White, turning incredulously toward Scarlett,
"Sister, no matter what, Mom raised you. How could you lay hands on her just like that? You... you're going too far!"
Even now, Isolde persisted in throwing shade at Scarlett.
After all, no one would trust the character of someone who'd lay hands on the adoptive mother who raised them.
Scarlett was thoroughly fed up with Isolde's hypocritical display, her almond eyes lifted as she retorted bluntly,
"Which eye saw me lay hands on her? Just because you're blind doesn't mean everyone else is."
Donovan listened aside, his eyes glinting with amused surprise.
His sister, usually so docile and soft, turned out to be quite adept at retorting when necessary.
Not bad, she was indeed a Jennings child.
He listened with interest while Emma White, infuriated by Scarlett's audacity, was mortified. She believed having raised her entitled her to strike Scarlett as she pleased!
But Scarlett dared to resist and even insult Isolde. In her rage, she disregarded that they were standing on the Jennings Family's grounds, pushing aside Isolde to charge at Scarlett.
"Insolent girl! You little brat..."
Scarlett watched expressionlessly, retreating a step to take action. But a figure blocked Emma White before she could move.
The man's back was broad and upright, exuding a solid sense of safety.
Any semblance of earlier mirth had vanished from his brows, replaced by an overbearing presence that was cold and daunting.
"This is the Jennings Family, not a place for reckless behavior."
