Donovan Jennings's voice successfully pulled Emma White's precarious sanity back, like a splash of cold water ending all her impulsive actions in an instant.
At the same time, the commotion here finally caught the attention of those inside the villa, and Luca Jennings came over from inside.
"What's happening?"
As the current head of Jennings Group, Luca Jennings was a figure frequently featured in various media and financial reports. Emma White recognized him almost immediately and disregarded her entanglement with Scarlett, turning with a smile to greet him.
"President Jiang, I'm the wife of Timothy Garrison, the CEO of Garrison Building Materials. I didn't expect you to be at home, this is truly wonderful."
Luca Jennings's gaze swept over Emma White, Scarlett, and Donovan, his expression unchanged as he asked,
"Mrs. Garrison, hello, is there anything you came here to explain?"
With Luca Jennings's status, he normally didn't need to be so polite to people, and he typically wasn't one for pleasantries. However, knowing that the person in front of him was from the family that had raised Scarlett, he extended a bit more patience, assuming she might be there to explain Scarlett's living habits or something similar.
Emma White, unaware of the reason, only felt her vanity swell at his polite inquiry if she had anything to explain.
This was the head of Jennings Group, actually asking her to tell him what to do! Evidently, her company was of significant importance in the eyes of the CEO of Jennings Group.
Her mood, previously irked by Donovan, finally smoothed over, even subconsciously puffing her chest. "There are indeed some matters to explain."
Emma White glanced smugly at Scarlett, then quickly pulled Isolde to her side, "President Jiang, this is my daughter, Isolde Garrison."
Isolde quickly greeted politely, "Hello, Uncle Jiang."
"It's like this, I heard that for Sea City's upcoming landmark project, the government plans to select eight students from the city's four major universities to act as representatives in a promotional film. The final list will be handed over to Jennings Group."
Emma White explained, "Due to some reasons, the spot originally meant for my daughter was taken by someone else. So I came hoping for Jennings Group's help to change that back. It's just a simple matter."
Luca Jennings slightly furrowed his brow.
He knew about this matter, but it was managed by his third brother, and he hadn't inquired about it.
His temperament was one that disliked personal gain through public resources.
But the person in front of him was from the family that had raised Scarlett; Luca Jennings couldn't help but consider this more.
Forget it, just take it as repaying them for raising Scarlett.
With this thought, Luca Jennings eased up, "I'll look into this matter. Who is the person that replaced your daughter's spot? I'll have my secretary check."
"Scarlett Garrison." Emma White was almost eager to blurt out.
Luca Jennings paused as he was about to take out his phone, looking up at Emma White, clearly startled, "Who did you say?"
"Scarlett Garrison." Emma White repeated, thinking he hadn't understood, she pointed directly at Scarlett beside her,
"It's her. This child was actually adopted by our family before, but she's an ingrate. Not only is she ill-tempered, but also a liar. I didn't expect her biological parents to work for the Jennings family. It's not that I want to speak ill of a child, but a person's character is fixed from birth. No matter how much effort I put into educating her, there's no learning if she doesn't grasp it..."
Emma White tirelessly slandered Scarlett, causing Donovan's face to darken. He finally realized what Scarlett meant earlier by 'playing tricks'.
The butler and housemaids nearby were stunned.
This...to berate the young lady in front of President Jiang like that.
This woman, is she out of her mind?
Scarlett had long been accustomed to Emma White's slander. Even when she had been raving in front of the butler earlier, she didn't care.
But now, in front of Donovan and her newly met biological father, Emma White's words inexplicably stirred her anger.
These were her newly acknowledged family; she had just begun to hope for something from them. But why, why couldn't this person bear to see her do well?
Did Emma White not realize what her words would make others think of her?
She knew.
But she didn't care; she purely wanted the whole world to dislike her.
When she was a child, whenever a teacher showed affection or even praised her, Emma White would find ways to slander her in front of the teacher, making the teachers believe she was a bad child.
Teachers never thought a mother would slander her own child, therefore they nearly always believed Emma White and thought of her as bad.
The more she was disliked, the more Isolde could overshadow her.
Eventually, Emma White's dislike and slander became a habit, as it was now.
Her hands hanging at her sides clenched tightly as she listened to the relentless defamation. Scarlett finally couldn't hold back,
"Shut up!"
"Shut up!"
Two voices burst out simultaneously. Scarlett instinctively turned to look at the other source of the voice.
It was Luca Jennings, his expression as frosty as ever.
He was naturally a stern-looking person, and now with his stern face, he appeared even more imposing.
Emma White was instantly silenced by fright.
Luca Jennings, face cold and somber, stared oppressively at Emma White, "A daughter of the Jennings family is not for an outsider like you to criticize. Butler, see the guests out!"
Emma White was bewildered by his sudden change in demeanor, failing to catch his phrase "a daughter of the Jennings family." She tried asking more, but the butler was already efficiently removing the guests.
Luca Jennings watched the mother and daughter being sent away with cold eyes, then turned to Scarlett, asking her, "Have the Garrison people been treating you like this?"
Upon saying this, he pursed his lips, realizing he was asking the obvious.
If they dared defame her to his face, who knew how they bullied his daughter in the Garrison household before?
He had thought that since his daughter was adopted by the Garrison family, she would at least have food and clothing. But to his dismay, the Garrison people were such scum!
The more Luca Jennings thought about it, the angrier he became. He turned and coldly instructed Donovan,
"Call your third uncle and have him withdraw the contract with the Garrison Corporation!"
That project was initially a form of repayment to the Garrison family for raising Scarlett, and it offered exceedingly generous terms. It not only promised Garrison Corporation profits in the billions but also aimed to elevate the Garrison family. Knowing now how the Garrison family treated Scarlett privately, he would no longer support them.
They weren't worthy!
Only then did Donovan regain his earlier cheerful demeanor, promptly taking out his phone. "Alright."
Scarlett stood in a daze, watching Luca Jennings's outburst, her eyes lowered slightly, a faint smile curling on her lips, unnoticed even by herself.
Her new brother and new father seemed different from the Garrison family.
...It was truly good.
At the main gate.
Emma White and Isolde were unceremoniously shown out of the Jennings's front door.
The two didn't understand why the president suddenly became so angry or what he meant by his earlier words.
A daughter of the Jennings family?
Who?
The butler, seeing that these two still hadn't realized it, wondered to himself how the Garrison family could be so foolish.
Originally, they had raised the young lady; with that favor, the Jennings family would undoubtedly reward them richly in the future. Yet the Garrison people still didn't understand that the foster daughter they called an ingrate was truly someone's child.
As the butler, he prided himself on his professionalism and rarely resorted to outbursts or sarcasm.
He decided to provide a polite reminder.
"President Jiang lost a daughter eighteen years ago. Today marks the day our young lady returns home, so naturally, President Jiang will not entertain slander against her. Forgive us, and please leave."
With that, he turned and instructed someone to close the villa gates.
Leaving Emma White and Isolde standing outside the gate, both stunned.
Emma White clung to her daughter's arm, dazedly asking, "Isolde, what did he just say... what young lady? Who?"
Isolde couldn't believe what she had heard, or rather, she didn't want to believe it.
"It's impossible... we must have misheard."
The daughter of the Jennings family couldn't possibly be Scarlett.
No, it couldn't be her!
Emma White turned slowly to look at her daughter, and after a long moment, suddenly her legs gave way, and she began to collapse towards the ground.
"It's over! We're finished!"
