Su Meixi said, "Moreover, we aren't familiar with each other. We've only met once. I don't understand you, and you don't understand me."
Today, Gu Wei was dressed in casual clothes with a messenger bag slung across his body. He pulled out a stack of documents from the bag, "All about me is on these documents."
Su Meixi took a deep breath.
An ID card, a military ID, a driver's license, a diploma, a household registration book... and even a property deed.
She gave an awkward smile, didn't look at the documents, and said, "I believe you're definitely a good person, but you don't understand me. My family is complicated; my parents are divorced. My ex-boyfriend broke up with me because he minded my family background."
Gu Wei said flatly, "I don't care about those things."
"I do, I'm just afraid you'll regret it later. It would make me feel even worse."
It was like when she broke up with Qi Anran. She outwardly said she didn't care, but her heart ached for a while.
The atmosphere turned stiff.
Just as Su Meixi was about to leave, a sleazy male voice came through.
"Well, isn't this my dear sister?"
Hearing this voice, Su Meixi's whole body stiffened, and her hands trembled.
Beside her, Gu Wei sensed something was off with Su Meixi.
He turned towards the voice and saw a man in a floral shirt with long hair and big tattoos on his arms approaching Su Meixi.
Su Meixi must be afraid of this man!
So, without a second thought, Gu Wei stood up and blocked her.
The man scoffed upon seeing Gu Wei, "Who are you?"
"Who are you?" Gu Wei asked calmly.
"I'm her brother, not biological, of course." The man's gaze moved past Gu Wei, resting on Su Meixi, as he sneered playfully, "Ah Xi, my dear sister, so you've hooked up with another man? How many does this make now?"
Su Meixi trembled with anger, her lips quivering.
This Li Jiekai was not biologically related to her; he was her stepfather's son from his mother's remarriage.
Su Meixi had never lived with him, but Li Jiekai often found opportunities to bully her.
One time, he secretly ambushed her at her door, trying to harass her, but fortunately a neighbor discovered and saved her.
Afterwards, she complained to her mother, but Li Jiekai got there first, accusing her of seducing him.
Her mother didn't support her, saying since there was no blood relation, they might as well be a couple to save on the bride price and dowry.
Furious, she didn't speak to her mother for two years.
Li Jiekai didn't stop there. Knowing that she was dating Qi Anran, he went to Qi Anran and spread rumors that she had slept with many men.
Qi Anran, whether he truly believed it or not, ended up breaking up with her.
"You're not trying to chase her, are you? Do you know what kind of person she is? Father doesn't care, mother doesn't love, she lives alone in that old house, no telling how many men she's brought home, nothing but damaged goods!"
Li Jiekai started spreading rumors to Gu Wei again.
At that moment, Su Meixi felt a chill, like plunging into an ice cellar.
Her parents had divorced when she was in second grade, each forming new families, abandoning her to fend for herself—countless times of anxiety and countless nights of loneliness and helplessness she had to endure alone.
Finally, she made it to college and then found a job, yet there were still people who wouldn't leave her in peace.
She grabbed the ashtray from the table, thinking of smashing it, to have a showdown with Li Jiekai that would bring an end to them both.
But before she could act, she heard a loud "thud"—Li Jiekai was already on the ground.
It was Gu Wei who had hit him!
He punched hard; Li Jiekai fell, blood on his lips, his head cracked open.
He stared at Gu Wei dazedly, "You... you hit me? Do you know who I am?"
Some passersby got scared away, while others gathered around to watch the excitement.
Gu Wei walked over to Li Jiekai, grabbed his collar, and pulled him up before punching him hard again!
In an instant, two of Li Jiekai's teeth shattered, his mouth full of blood.
The arrogance he just displayed was gone, his eyes only showing terror.
Gu Wei grabbed his collar again, lifted him up like a chicken, and warned, "To slander a girl with such filthy language is simply despicable! Today it is just two punches, but if there is a next time, don't blame me for breaking your arms and legs!"
Then he slammed him harshly onto the ground.
Su Meixi was stunned.
Gu Wei was protecting her? And he called her a girl?
After Gu Wei finished fighting, he returned to Su Meixi's side, "Dr. Su, do we want to change places to talk?"
Su Meixi suddenly laughed.
"Mr. Gu, I want to ask you a question."
"What question?" Gu Wei asked.
"Do you hit your wife?"
Gu Wei replied decisively, "Force is meant to protect people, I would never hit my wife!"
"Then, do you still want to marry me?"
Gu Wei paused for a moment, then nodded.
...
Half an hour later, at Yang Guang Apartment.
Su Meixi and Gu Wei took the elevator to the 16th floor, stopping at Room 1602.
"The digital lock can use a fingerprint or a code; the password is 930301, my birthday. If you are willing, you can move in anytime," said Gu Wei.
Su Meixi laughed awkwardly, "Let's wait until we're married."
Then, Gu Wei opened the door, and Su Meixi saw a large flat layout.
The furniture was simple, clean, and neat; the entire house had no extra decorations and matched Gu Wei's personality.
"Did you buy this apartment?" Su Meixi asked.
"It's mine, I have the deed. I can add your name, before or after the wedding," said Gu Wei.
Su Meixi: "…"
She hadn't asked him to add her name.
There were no women's slippers in the house; Gu Wei added, "No need to change shoes. After we eat, I'll go down and buy some daily necessities for you."
Su Meixi awkwardly said, "There's no rush. Let's discuss it after getting married."
"You can sit for now, or look around if you like. I'm going to cook; I bought the groceries this morning."
"Sure," Su Meixi smiled at him.
When Gu Wei went into the kitchen, she looked around the spacious house, her palms sweating.
Would marrying him be too impulsive?
Oh well, she had already agreed. It was settled then.
She wandered around the house; there were three rooms in total, a large hall, very few furniture pieces, one room was even bare without any furniture, really nothing much to see.
She went to the kitchen and leaned on the doorway.
Gu Wei was wearing an apron and peeling shrimp; he expertly trimmed the heads, split the backs, and extracted the veins.
Noticing her presence, he continued peeling the shrimp and asked, "Why aren't you resting?"
Su Meixi said, "Do you need any help?"
"No need, I can manage on my own."
"But you are injured."
"It's okay, it's just my leg, not my hands."
Su Meixi then went back to the living room to sit down.
She thought of turning on the TV, but Su Meixi realized she didn't know how to operate his TV.
Where she currently lived, which was her grandfather's old rundown place, the TV was an old, heavy model that required adjusting antennas.
But in Gu Wei's home, it was a flat-screen TV connected to a set-top box, and there were two remotes, she wasn't accustomed to it and didn't bother learning.
Sitting on the sofa, listening to the sounds of pots and spatulas clashing in the kitchen along with the escaping savory aromas, she suddenly felt a peculiar sensation.
Ever since her grandfather had passed away, she had been living alone, cooking for herself, and it had been a long time since anyone had cooked for her.
It felt like she had returned to her childhood, when she was pampered by others.
Because of this, her mind gradually relaxed, and she eventually unknowingly fell asleep on the sofa.
"Dr. Su, it's time to eat."
After an unknown amount of time, Su Meixi heard someone calling her.
