Ellie Doyle's face showed little sign of joy. She anxiously gestured for the housekeeper, Mrs. Lee, to remain silent.
Mrs. Lee seemed puzzled. "Ms. Doyle, but this is a happy occasion! Aren't you glad?"
Ellie shook her head. It wasn't that she wasn't happy; it was that she hadn't expected to get pregnant at this time.
She knew Hugo Hayes' temperament well.
If he were to find out about her pregnancy now, he might not permit her to continue participating in the experiment.
But as the team edged closer toward success, she wasn't willing to give up.
Her hand rested against her still-flat belly as Ellie bit her lip and spoke seriously once more. "Mrs. Lee, for now, please don't let anyone else know about this. I haven't decided whether to tell him yet."
Mrs. Lee was astonished, but upon seeing the complicated emotions on Ellie's face, she nodded immediately. "Ms. Doyle, rest assured, I won't breathe a word of this to anyone."
