Just before the official court proceedings, Dashiell sent me another message:
From his initial hope that I wouldn't divorce him.
To his later proposal that if divorce was inevitable, we should consider splitting our marital assets 50/50.
"Emily, this has blown up big time. It's not good for the company's stock price either. Why don't we settle this privately?"
"My family's company doesn't need your concern."
This company was actually the least valuable one in my family's portfolio.
For other types of companies, my dad had long ago hired professional managers to handle them for me. They'd regularly deposit a fixed amount of profit into my account each month, and these were all under my name even before the marriage.
I remembered what Dad always said, "A crafty rabbit has three burrows."
"Men understand men best, Emily. He may love you now, but who knows how long that love will last? In this world, only money won't betray you."
