The world of Neo-Empyrean, a sprawling futuristic city built on the ruins of the Old World, thrives and survives thanks to its elite Hunters—warriors blessed with the Leveling System. These individuals gain XP from slaying monsters and completing portal-related missions, making them humanity's only defense against Portal Breaks—massive invasions of monsters that pour out like waves of destruction.



Carter Hayes is anything but elite. He's a Level 3 "Hunter," stuck in a system where the average citizen without combat experience starts at Level 5. His stats are abysmal, his skills laughable, and his peers see him as a joke. But Carter doesn't care. He refuses to chase power, believing that fighting the monsters is futile in the grand scheme of things. Instead, he lives quietly in a crumbling apartment, working as a low-tier scavenger around breached portals.



However, Carter's apathy is tested when an Abyssal Portal—an anomaly that no Hunter team has ever survived—opens in the heart of the city. As the government scrambles to respond, Carter finds himself trapped inside the portal during a scavenging run, surrounded by monsters far beyond his level. But instead of dying, he discovers a glitch in the Leveling System—one that doesn’t make him stronger, but might just make him useful in ways no one ever imagined.
