  The smell of her was faint but unmistakable, and Ragnar wasted no time in running at full speed. Every few steps, he sniffed the air to ensure he was still heading in the right direction. We plunged deeper into the woods, where the trees were so thick that only sporadic flecks of sunshine sliced through the canopy as we darted between them.

  But it didn't matter; Ragnar's senses were beyond comprehension—his hearing, sense of smell, and sight worked together like a finely tuned machine. It felt like I had been upgraded by some magical power when I let Ragnar take over. I saw things I'd never noticed before, beetles tumbling off a log and birds flapping their wings as they flew away from branches.
