Emma's POV
My heart racing with fear, I rushed towards the rogue and the child, my sword at the ready. With each step, I was terrified that the rogue would harm the child, that it'd be too late, that I might fail.
My mind was a jumbled of worst-case scenarios, my breath coming in short gasps. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, my grip on my sword tightening.
As I got closer, the rogue looked up, his eyes locking onto mine. For a moment, we stared at each other, the only sound was the child's whimpering.
I froze, my foot hovering above the ground. I was afraid to take another step, afraid to provoke the rogue into harming the child.
But then, something inside me snapped. I remembered why I was fighting, why I was risking everything. I wanted to save these people and I would do that with all that I had and with every ounce of strength inside of me.
