Isabelle sat quietly for a moment and her gaze distant as she remembered the harrowing journey she had endured years ago. Elizabeth sat across from her, watching her mother with awe, anticipation, and a hint of concern.
Isabelle cleared her throat softly, finally finding her voice. "After we left, Elizabeth… your father, his family, everyone, none of them made it easy. We barely escaped with our lives."
Elizabeth held her breath, hanging on her mother's every word.
"We managed to reach the border by stowing away on a cargo ship. It was a terrifying journey, traveling in the shadows, hoping no one would notice us. I was seven months pregnant with you and every bump, every jolt made me fear for your life but we made it through. By some miracle, we survived that long, desperate journey." Isabelle explained and her face softened as she looked at Elizabeth with a small smile tugging at her lips.
