CHAPTER12: A Heart Torn

  Hannah's POV

A wave of dread washed over me. The last thing I needed right now was another conversation with him. But after a moment of hesitation, I decided to answer. If I do not answer he will buzz me all day. Why doesn't he leave me alone? Reluctantly, I answered, my voice tense as I greeted him.

"Michael," I said, trying to keep my tone neutral.

"Hannah," Michael's voice was softer than usual, almost hesitant. "I just wanted to check on you. How's the new job going?"

I bit back a sigh. "It's my first day. I'm settling in."

"Right, of course," he responded, sounding awkward. There was a brief silence before he continued, "I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear, but... I miss you, Hannah. I've been thinking about us, about everything that happened."

My heart tightened at his words. How many times had we been through this? How many times had he tried to reach out, to pull me back into the past?
