CHAPTER 47 Desperate Times

  Leila's POV

Dominic knelt beside me and took my hand in his. "We're going to do everything we can. We have to believe that he'll be alright. You have to be strong, Leila.

"I don't know if I can," I choked out. "He's my brother, the only family I have left. He's everything."

Dominic squeezed my hand. "I know. We'll get through this."

We sat in expectant silence, every little noise in the hallway making my heart leap. Minutes ticked by like a long, drawn-out nightmare.

Finally, a doctor came in. His eyes were red from the lack of sleep, his face quite serious. Dominic and I rose, our hearts in our throats.

Michael's condition is critical," he informed us. "We are doing everything in our power, but we do have to be realistic. His chances are slim."

"No," I whispered, "No, there has to be something that can be done. I can't lose him," I cried out, clutching onto Dominic's shirt.
