CHAPTER 46 The Edge of Control

  Eliza's POV

  I slid the ring off my finger, still feeling the slight warmth from where Cavin had slipped it on just moments before. My heart was still racing from our banter, the charged look in his eyes making it hard to catch my breath. But even as the spark lingered, I felt the cool reminder of reality: Natalie, hovering nearby, watching us like a hawk. And then there was Nikolai, still standing beside me, blissfully unaware of the turmoil unfolding within me.

  "That ring looked stunning on you, Eliza," Nikolai said, breaking the silence. He was leaning against the counter, watching me with a soft, admiring gaze that somehow only made the tangled feelings in my chest tighten further. I guess his flirting didn't work on the assistant girls.

  "Thanks," I murmured, sliding it back into the display. "It was beautiful."
