  Eliza's pov

  I paced back and forth in my room, the tension from earlier lingering in the pit of my stomach. Cavin had left in such a hurry. Even after he reassured me, something felt off. I knew these family issues were weighing on him, but it seemed like something else—a darker weight—was pressing down on him. I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more he wasn't telling me.

  I stopped by the window, peering out at the empty driveway where his car had just been. The whole house felt still, the silence heavy. I wrapped my arms around myself, feeling a shiver run through me.

  "Is everything okay?" A voice broke the quiet, making me jump. I turned to see my mom standing in the doorway, a concerned look on her face.

  "Yeah… I think so," I replied, though my tone wasn't convincing even to myself. "Cavin just left for work, but things were a bit…tense. There was an argument between his parents."
