  The morning light filtered through my curtains, but it did nothing to calm my nerves. Today was the day I dreaded most—my engagement. My stomach churned as I sat on my bed, staring at my phone, hoping for a distraction.

  I had called Cavin countless times since waking up, but he didn't answer. Not once. I had seen him rushing out of the mansion earlier, his expression unreadable, his pace hurried. He didn't even glance back. A frown etched itself onto my face. Why was he avoiding me today of all days?

  Frustration bubbled inside me. Was he just going to leave me to deal with this alone? I tried to shake the thoughts away, but they lingered, wrapping around my mind like a dark cloud.
