Max usually stayed outside in the servants' quarters and only came into the house when Alexander was around. My eyes scanned the room. All the windows were shut, and there seemed to be an unusual number of staff present.
My heart was still uneasy. I knew I was living in a den of vipers. Alexander was supposed to call me. It was dinnertime, and he'd never forget to check if I'd eaten.
Ignoring everything else, I sat in the chair by the fireplace and called Alexander. His phone rang, but no one answered. Strange. He usually picked up right away.
Before my thoughts spiraled further, someone finally answered.
"Hello, princess," came Samuel's voice.
Damn it. Why did he have Alexander's phone? "I don't want your nonsense, Samuel. Where is Alexander? He never forgets to call me at dinnertime."
