Azula's first day

POV Azula

Walking through the halls of my new estate I couldn't help but be impressed at the architecture of the building. It honestly seemed as if the entire house was carved from one piece of stone, everything fit seamlessly together.

"I take it you like the estate?" Faunalyn asked.

"It isn't the palace in the fire capital, but it is quite impressive, it is small compared to the palace though"

"What did you expect, it's an entire estate in a city crowded with buildings" Faunalyn laughed.

Giving her an annoyed look I continued "The furniture is quite nice though, I did not expect much of it to be in the style of the fire nation" .

"True, it honestly looks quite good. Have you been told what exactly you will be doing in administration"

"Apparently because of my rural upbringing I am going to be put in charge of various topics of infrastructure for the city itself"

"Oh cool, paperwork" Faunalyn said sarcastically "How is the eye?"

"It is working quite well; my eyesight has become much sharper. It has also helped in gaining levels on this floor" I replied pulling up my status.

"And the dragon fire?"

"I have control over it now"

"Good, good. Can't have your burning down more rooms"

Giving her another glare I started walking faster, making it to my newly furnished office. It had a simple desk and a few bookshelves filled with various books I have yet to read. Sitting down at the desk I opened the drawer and pulled out a new writing utensil called a pen. I quite liked it as it took much less effort to write correctly.

I jumped a bit as a few books were dropped onto the desk "What are you doing Faunalyn?" I asked, annoyed.

"If you are going to be a noble you need to know about the city. These books were specially chosen for you to get familiar with the city and its people".

"Fine" I said, shuffling through the few books "Denizens of the Tower, Architecture and History behind the city, Laws and Regulations, Classes and Abilities. This is going to be a lot of reading"

"What did you expect? Being a nob;e f a city you don't know anything about would be ridiculous"

"Please leave, I need silence" I said finally, too annoyed to deal with her sarcastic remarks.

"Before I leave here" she replied, placing a large stack of papers on my desk.

"What is this?"

"It's a written report of your holdings after you were officially given your noble title. Money, property, expenses, personnel"

"Personnel?"

"You are a noble in an estate, you are going to need at least a few maids and cooks"

"And they were willing to work for a human?"

"Not completely human, not anymore. To answer your question, yes, if you look at the expense reports you will see their wage is higher than normal and it was stressed that it was strictly volunteer's nobody was assigned"

Feeling a headache coming on I let my head drop into my hand "Please leave me to this"

"Of course my lady," Faunalyn said with an exaggerated curtsy.

I just gave her a deep scowl as she left the room. Turning to the paperwork I started rifling through the written reports. It seems that the Tower Master has assigned me a good amount of finances to use, though much of it was caught up in investments into local businesses, personnel, and various budgets for the estate.

Hearing a knock on the door I looked up saying "Come in"

A young elf came in wearing a knee-high dress and her brown hair pulled up into a ponytail, she was also carrying a try with what I think was food.

"Hello mam, I am Lyra, one of the maids hired to help around the estate," she said, placing the tray on my desk.

"What is this?" I asked, pointing to the food, which seemed to be some kind of soup and some bread.

"It's you lunch, a broccoli and cheese soup with some sour dough bread"

"It's lunch" I said pausing "I didn't realize it had been that long"

"Please eat," Lyra suggested.

Putting aside the papers I picked up a spoon and brought it to my mouth. It was absolutely delicious.

"Hmmm" I practically monad, then hearing myself I felt the heat rise to my cheeks.

"I take it you like it"

"Yes, it is good" I commented, then looked directly at Lyra "Can I ask you something?"

"Of course,"

"Why work for me?"

"I don't know what you mean?"

"Everyone here has a dislike for humans, generally trying to avoid being too casual with them. So why then would you volunteer to work for me?"

"Because I don't feel that dislike around you, in fact nobody dose"

"What?" I was surprised.

"If I may be so bold, it has to do with your eye. It is obvious that it came from a dragon and a powerful one at that"

"What does that have to do with that?" I asked genuinely confused.

"Well because of its source it kind of emits a sinister or powerful aura, kind of makes people forget that you are even human. Plus, the pay is double what I would be making otherwise"

Without a word I just started eating my lunch again, savoring each bite. To be honest as much as I like the dragon's eye, the mere fact I have a creature's eye in my head is uncomfortable to say the least. Picking up the bread I quickly ate it as politely as possible while trying to rush through the meal.

Setting the utensils onto the tray I said "The meal was good Lyra you can take the tray back now. I have some more papers to go over"

"I will let the chef know you liked it," she said, leaving the room with the tray.

I then spent the rest of the day looking over the paperwork as well as skimming through the books. I even ended up eating dinner in the office as well, fortunately this is not the first time I have had to deal with paperwork. Growing up a princess in the capital required having to learn much of the more unpleasant sides of ruling a nation.

Sighing I said "This is going to be a long week" and it was only monday.
