The moment Hugo's eyes locked onto the golden badge, his heart surged with hope. It gleamed tantalizingly in the sunlight, clutched by a small squirrel perched on a branch.
The creature tilted its head, as though mocking him.
"There it is!" Hugo pointed dramatically, his voice a mix of relief and determination. "You! Rodent! Drop the badge and walk away!"
The squirrel twitched its nose, clearly unimpressed. Then, without warning, it shoved the badge into its mouth, turned tail, and scampered up the tree.
Hugo's jaw dropped. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me."
From a few feet away, Rose burst into laughter so loud that Shine almost slid off her back. "You're getting played by a squirrel!"
"Not now, Rose!" Hugo snapped, glaring over his shoulder. "I am not losing to a fuzzy-tailed thief!"
Determined, Hugo leapt at the tree, his arms scrabbling for a grip on the bark. The tree, as if mocking his efforts, was slick and unyielding.
After a few awkward moments of flailing and grunting, gravity reasserted itself, and he slid back down, landing unceremoniously on his rear.
Rose was in hysterics now, tears streaming down her face. "I—can't—breathe! This is priceless!"
Hugo shot her a death glare as he got to his feet. "I don't care if I have to climb every tree in this forest! I'm getting that badge!"

Phase One: The Climb
Hugo gritted his teeth and began scaling the tree with renewed determination. The squirrel, now perched on a higher branch, paused to nibble on an acorn, as if it had all the time in the world.
"You think you're funny, don't you?" Hugo muttered, pulling himself up one branch at a time. "Well, joke's on you, pal! I'm not giving up!"
The squirrel twitched its tail, then darted further up the tree. Hugo groaned. "Why is this tree so tall?!"
Below, Rose called up, her voice laced with amusement. "You look like a cat stuck in a tree. Need me to call the fire department?"
"Keep it up, Rose, and I'll make you carry me and the badge back!" Hugo shot back.

Phase Two: The Leap of Faith
When the squirrel reached the top, it leapt gracefully to the neighboring tree, its fluffy tail swishing through the air.
Hugo froze. The gap between the trees wasn't huge, but it was far enough to make him hesitate. "You've got to be kidding me…"
"Don't do it!" Rose yelled from below, shielding Shine's eyes dramatically. "This is going to end terribly!"
"I don't have a choice!" Hugo shouted back. He took a deep breath, crouched low, and launched himself into the air.
For one glorious second, he thought he was flying. Then his foot caught a branch, and he tumbled face-first into the next tree, arms flailing.
"Ow, ow, ow—!" He managed to grab onto a branch just before falling, hanging there like a ragdoll. "Nailed it." he muttered through gritted teeth.
The squirrel, now safely on the ground, chittered up at him mockingly.

Phase Three: The Ground Chase
Hugo finally climbed back down and bolted after the squirrel, his eyes blazing with determination. The small creature darted through the underbrush with incredible speed, weaving between roots and bushes.
"Why is this thing so fast?!" Hugo panted, jumping over a log.
"You're being outrun by a squirrel!" Rose called after him, still laughing.
"Not helping!" Hugo snapped, nearly tripping over a root.
The squirrel paused briefly, glancing back as if to check on him, then dashed forward again. Hugo lunged, diving headfirst into a bush. He emerged covered in leaves and twigs, spitting out a mouthful of dirt.
"Okay, that's it!" Hugo growled. "No more Mr. Nice Guy!"

Phase Four: The Standoff
The squirrel finally stopped at the edge of a small clearing, standing on its hind legs with the badge still clutched in its tiny paws. Hugo approached cautiously, hands raised in a placating gesture.
"Alright, little guy.." he said, his voice low and steady. "Let's make a deal. You give me the badge, and I… I don't chase you anymore. How's that sound?"
The squirrel tilted its head, its beady eyes glinting with mischief. Slowly, it placed the badge on the ground.
Hugo's heart leapt. "Yes! Finally—"
Before he could finish, the squirrel snatched the badge back and bolted.
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" Hugo screamed, tearing after it.

Phase Five: The Final Showdown
After what felt like hours, Hugo finally cornered the squirrel at the base of a massive oak tree. Its tiny chest heaved from exertion, the golden badge still clutched tightly in its small paws.
"You've got nowhere to run now.." Hugo muttered, wiping the sweat from his brow. He crouched low, ready for the final push.
The squirrel darted left, attempting to flee, but Hugo anticipated the move.
With a burst of speed fueled by sheer determination, he lunged forward, his left hand outstretched. "Gotcha!"
His hand closed around the squirrel mid-leap, the creature wriggling furiously in his grasp.
It chirped angrily, its tiny claws scratching at his gauntlet. But Hugo held firm, his grip steady despite the commotion.
Rose and Shine emerged from the underbrush just in time to witness the scene. Rose doubled over, laughing so hard she almost dropped Shine. "You're telling me it took you all this time to catch that?"
"This thing is faster than it looks!" Hugo snapped, carefully prying the golden badge from the squirrel's grip with his gauntleted right hand.
The squirrel chirped in protest, but Hugo raised the badge triumphantly into the air.
"I finally freaking win!" he declared, the sunlight reflecting off the badge.
The squirrel, now dangling from his left hand, paused its struggle and glared at him with comically narrowed eyes. Hugo, noticing this, sighed. "Fine. You put up a good fight for a damn squirrel."
He gently placed the squirrel on the ground, and it scampered a few feet away before turning to face him. It twitched its tail defiantly before disappearing into the trees.
Rose clapped mockingly, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Truly, Hugo, you're an inspiration to us all. The great squirrel slayer!"
Shine, still on her back, gave him a thumbs-up. "That was amazing! …But also a little sad."
"Laugh all you want." Hugo said, his breathing still uneven. He held up the badge with a triumphant grin. "But I got it, didn't I?"
Rose shook her head, smirking. "I'll give you this, you're persistent. Dumb, maybe, but quite too persistent.."
Hugo didn't care. He had the badge, and that was all that mattered. As they began their walk back toward the starting point, he glanced over his shoulder at the trees.
The squirrel was watching him from a high branch, its tail flicking.
Hugo could've sworn he saw a glint of amusement in its tiny black eyes, as though this battle wasn't over.
"Not happening, you little thief." Hugo muttered under his breath, as he quickly put the badge into his pocket. Then, to his companions, he said, "Let's just get back before something else ridiculous happens."
The group trudged through the dense forest, the air growing cooler as the sunlight began to filter through the treetops at an angle that suggested late afternoon.
After a while, they stumbled upon a glowing, swirling portal nestled between two trees. The faint hum it emitted filled the air with an almost welcoming vibration.
"There it is." Rose said, pointing at the portal. She adjusted Shine, who was slumped on her back, and sighed. "Finally."
"Finally is right..." Hugo muttered. Rose had somehow convinced him to take over carrying duties again, and his legs were beginning to ache. "Let's just hope we don't run into any more surprises."
They stepped into the portal together, the swirling light enveloping them. For a brief moment, Hugo felt weightless, as though he were suspended in the air.
Then, with a flash, the light disappeared, and the three of them found themselves in a spacious clearing filled with other candidates who had already returned.
