Odessa stood at the party, a smile plastered on her face as she pretended to enjoy her self while making little chats with the other guests. The music, the laughter and he chatter all blended into a cacophony of annoyance. Just as she finished talking to a guest, her dad arrived with a man and at that moment her mum also arrived
"Odessa dear, I'd like you to meet the Mayor's brother, Robert" her dad said beaming with pride. Odessa mum smiled warmly and extended her hand
"It's nice to meet you Mr Robert". Odessa followed suit trying to appear nice despite her reservations
"Nice to meet you Sir" she said
"The pleasure is all mine Mrs Ross and Odessa, your father has told me so much about you" Robert said. Odessa dad placed a hand on her shoulder and said
"Odessa is a bright and ambitious young woman and I am proud to have her as my daughter". Odessa wished that at that moment everything he said was true but she couldn't be fooled easily, she wondered why her father could be so fake, so ambitious. She excused herself from there. Later on she saw her dad and George Anderson talking together, she wondered what they both could be talking about so she walked closer to them so she could hear their conversation or as you guys would like to call it eavesdrop
" I'm telling you George, Odessa thinks she's so smart, but she's not ready for the real world" Odessa father said, his voice low and conspiratorial
George raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement on his face.
"Why would you say that about your daughter Ray" George asked
Odessa's father leaned in a hint of malice in his eyes
"She's too soft, too idealistic, she thinks she can change the world but George I tell you she is going to get eaten up"
George nodded thoughtfully
"I see and you are worried if she works for me she'll ...?"
Odessa father smiled, a cold and calculating smile
"I'm worried she'll fail and spectacularly I'm counting on you to make that happen" Ray said
"If I may ask why do you want Odessa to fail so much" George asked
"George we've known each other for years and you very well know I like to keep things private" Ray said
George narrowed his eyes and said
"Fine I can do that, I can make sure she's given hard tasks, she knows her limitations, sabotage her stage play and do a lot more horrible things"
Ray chuckled and said
"Excellent,I knew I could always count on you, let's make sure Odessa knows her place"
"That won't be a problem" George said
Odessa was feeling heartbroken, so even say heartbroken was an understatement, the very opportunity she had always been dreaming of even as a child was undermined by her own father, she quickly retreated making sure George and her father were not aware of her presence, she went to get a drink, she needed to cool her head down, she went to the bar
"A vodka please" she said and just as she got her drink, the devil appeared
George made his way to Odessa with a smile on his face. But Odessa had already composed herself
"Hey Odessa, I've been looking forward to seeing you again, how is it going" George asked
"Oh hi George, I'm good, thanks for asking, just trying to enjoy the party" Odessa said staying calm, Odessa had always learnt to hide her emotions since she was a child after what happened years ago
"You look like an ethereal goddess" George said. Odessa let out a small smile
"Thank you"
"I was thinking maybe we should discuss the details of your internship very soon" George said
"Yeah, sure thanks" Odessa said, a hint of sarcasm in her voice
"I'll have my assistant send over the paperwork and maybe you can drop by my office so we could discuss the details" George said
"OK"
"I'm looking forward to working with you" George said
"Me too, please excuse me" Odessa said and left
Raymond was chatting with a few guests when the Mayor's guard came to meet him
"Mr Ross, the Mayor requests your presence"
"What's this about" Ray asked
"Not sure but it sounds urgent" the guard said and Ray quietly followed him to the Mayor's office. In the Mayor's office, the Mayor was sitted with Ray sitting opposite him
"You all should leave" the Mayor said dispersing his assistant and guard that was inside
"Gunnar what's the problem" Ray asked the Mayor
"It's Zaynix" Gunnar answered
"Well what does that son of a bitch want this time" Ray asked
"He sent a message that he's coming and along with that message he sent a knife, you know what that means" Gunnar said
"Yes I do but wait a minute do you think he found out about our plan to renege the agreement" Ray asked
"I think so and in that letter he didn't sound happy" Gunnar replied
"What are we going to do" Ray asked, a hint of fear on his face
"I dunno, if I did, you wouldn't be here" Gunnar replied anxious
At the party
The music paused, and the chatter died down as a mysterious figure appeared at the entrance of the grand ballroom. All eyes turned to the newcomer, and Odessa's gaze followed suit. She felt an inexplicable jolt, as if she had seen the figure before, but couldn't quite place him.
The stranger was clad in all black, from his tailored suit to his gloves and shoes. Even his face was obscured by a black hat that covered half of his face, making it impossible to discern any defining features. He stood tall, his broad shoulders and imposing physique commanding attention.
Odessa's heart skipped a beat as the stranger's gaze swept the room, his eyes seeming to linger on her for a fraction of a second. She felt a shiver run down her spine, but couldn't explain why.
The room remained silent, with all eyes fixed on the enigmatic figure. Even George, who had been holding court with the Mayor's brother, looked taken aback by the stranger's sudden arrival.
The Mayor's assistant quickly went to informe him on the arrival of Zaynix.
