Chapter 23: A Night of Surprises

He kissed me back, but then recoiled, studying me. I felt uncomfortable under his gaze.

"What's the matter?" I asked him, batting my eyelashes. I had to continue the innocent act.

Pinching my cheek, he asked, "Should I assume your deflection means you are trying to seduce me?"

Underneath him, I was helpless. There was nothing I could do. My only hope was to charm him, let his guard down, then I might be able to find his weak points.

It would be a long battle, and I had to be patient.

"I didn't answer because I thought you already knew," I whispered breathy and tilting my head, gripping his shirt collar. "You can read me like a book."

He kissed me again, more eagerly than the first time but pulled back once more, his eyes darting all over my face. My heart sank. What else did he want?

"I need you to understand, you can never run. Nothing you do will change the power I have over your life."
