RED ROOM

ORIGIN: Japan

The urban legend of The Red Room is a legend about a cursed pop-up ad that appears on a victim's computer screen.

The ad is simple, displaying a red background with black Japanese text that asks, "Do you like the red room?"

No matter how many times the user attempts to close it, the ad stubbornly reappears.

Eventually, the computer freezes, and from within the computer voice reads the question aloud.

Soon after encountering the ad, the victim is found dead in their room, with the walls painted in their own blood.

Their cause of death is often linked to suicide, though the gory state of their corpse obviously says otherwise.

The Red Room legend gained notorious popularity after being linked to a tragic real-life crime in Japan in 2004, further increasing its eerie reputation.

The idea of a deadly computer virus combined with a supernatural curse plays on fears of losing control over technology and the unknown dangers lurking online.

Red room urban legend serves as a modern warning tale about the dark side of the internet.
