ORIGIN: French folklore.
The Detroit Red Dwarf is also known as Nain Rouge and is a tale that has haunted the city of Detroit for over three centuries.
In french, "Nain Rouge" means "Red Dwarf,"
It is believed to be an agent of doom and a bringer of disasters for the city.
It is a small, childish looking figure with red eyes, sharp teeth, and is covered in red fur or tattered clothing.
The Nain Rouge is said to bring misfortune to anyone who meets it one on one.
The legend dates back to 1701 when Detroit's founder, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, had a fateful run-in with the creature.
Ignoring the warning from passersby to respect the Nain Rouge, Cadillac insulted and beat up the dwarf.
Soon after, his fortune was gone, his business was practically ruined and his life took a deep dive for the pits.
That was the first marking of the Nain Rouge's association with bad luck.
Throughout Detroit's history, more and more of the Nain Rouge had been seen and more tragedies has happened to those who met them.
Most who saw the creature said itbl csmf before big events like the Great Fire of 1805 and the Riots of 1967.
The Nain Rouge remains a symbol of misfortune in Detroit folklore till this day.
And each year, locals now hold the March du Nain Rouge, a parade used to ward off bad luck and to mock and drive away the mischievous spirit.
