And it gained widespread attention through Rudyard Kipling's 1885 short story The Phantom 'Rickshaw, but…

Since then, the tale has taken on a life of its own, becoming an unsetting urban legend retold across generations.

The story revolves around a British officer named Jack Pansay, who enters into a forbidden affair with a woman named Agnes Keith-Wessington. 

Their relationship ends bitterly, and Agnes, heartbroken and sad from the break up, dies a few days later.

However, her death does not bring peace. 

Soon after her passing, Jack begins to see a ghostly rickshaw moving through the streets of Simla (modern-day Shimla), with Agnes seated inside. 

Her ghost is described as pale, sorrowful, and draped in white, while her are eyes filled with sadness. 

The rickshaw's driver is invisible, and the vehicle moves silently, never making any noise at all.

As time goes on, the phantom rickshaw and Agnes's ghost to follow Jack wherever he goes and soon…

Jack runs mad.

This legend is a story that warns one of guilt and the consequences of breaking hearts. 

Those who see the phantom rickshaw are cursed, forever haunted by their sins until their dying breath.
