Chapter 63 Final battle with lupin

Chapter 63.

Beneath a thick, resilient coat of fur was a muscular, powerful human-like body. Just by seeing it effortlessly climb onto the window ledge with one hand and leap up to the roof of the adjacent building with its feet on the brick wall, one could tell that the hidden strength within was absolutely explosive.

Supported by pure physical strength, the figure leaped high and dropped heavily, continuously leaping across the castle's various spires, heading straight towards Soren.

As it got closer, even its face became clear — it was a terrifying werewolf head that occasionally roared.

Soren sighed, disregarding Black's reaction, and quickly ran towards the werewolf. Normally, werewolves wouldn't attack animals, so its target was clearly him.

While running, Soren's mind raced through various spells and tactics, and he also kept an eye on the surrounding environment, firmly committing all factors to memory — today's full moon was cloudless, there was plenty of light, no chill in the air, the location was near the Forbidden Forest, and the grass covered black clay suitable for plant growth.

When they were less than three feet apart, the werewolf lunged forward. The werewolf's jumping ability was no joke; that three feet distance closed in an instant. Soren calmly raised his wand and cast "Agumanti" at the werewolf, a high-pressure water jet like a fire hydrant shot out from the tip of the wand, hitting the werewolf mid-air and propelling it away!

The werewolf crashed onto the grass several feet away. As it tried to stand, it realized it wasn't drenched in pure water but in a viscous liquid akin to strong glue — that was Soren's "Glue Spell," created by adjusting the viscosity in the Agumanti spell!

Soren seamlessly executed the next combo; he aimed his wand at the ground and cast Transfiguration, transforming the black clay beneath the grass into a swamp!

While the werewolf was still struggling to free itself from the glue, it found its body quickly sinking. The more it struggled, the faster it sank. It let out a long howl, curling its body to slow its descent and grabbing onto the surrounding solid ground in an attempt to crawl out of the swamp.

Soren wouldn't give it that chance. He waved his wand rapidly, and the black clay, similarly conducive to plant growth, suddenly sprouted deep green vines, as thick as an adult's arm, which wound around the werewolf in concentric circles until only its head was left exposed.

The poor werewolf couldn't move a finger.

Soren had known from the start that werewolf skin had a strong anti-magic effect, so he had no intention of casting spells directly on the werewolf. Instead, he opted for physical binding using Transfiguration, and it turned out this tactic was indeed effective.

Soren turned to look in Black's direction, only to discover that the black dog had disappeared at some point.

The commotion from this battle wasn't actually loud since Soren hadn't used any flashy magic. Although the howls of the wolf were loud, they didn't draw the professors' attention — after all, the presence of wolf packs in the Forbidden Forest was no secret.

After firing a red spark into the sky, Soren cast the Invisibility Charm and stealthily made his way to Hagrid's hut. He passed by Hagrid, who likely saw his signal and rushed off to check what was happening.

Outside Hagrid's hut, Soren saw Buckbeak tied to a post. He gained Buckbeak's trust using methods taught in class and then guided it into his suitcase's space.

Soren also sneaked into the hut, causing a bit of chaos inside to create signs of a break-in. He then took away a unicorn tail hair that was hanging on the wall and used by Hagrid as a bandage. This was valuable; a small handful of unicorn tail hair was worth 10 Galleons, and the amount Soren took was worth at least 100 Galleons, so it would be a waste to leave it with Hagrid.

[Unicorn Tail Hair Obtained!]

At this time, the professors who saw the red spark had already rushed to the location where the werewolf was. Soren had no confidence that his Invisibility Charm could deceive Dumbledore— to avoid being discovered by Dumbledore, who might start looking for him, Soren took a detour and returned to the castle through another secret passage. He then quietly returned to the dormitory without alarming anyone.

[Buckbeak the Hippogriff Acquired!]

The next morning during breakfast, Professor Lupin did not appear at the staff table. The young wizards discussed it among themselves, but no one knew what had happened.

Instead, another incident captured the students' interest more: the Hippogriff that attacked Blaise, named "Buckbeak," had gone missing. It was said that Hagrid's hut had been broken into, and the intruder had stolen Buckbeak as well.

The Ministry of Magic sent officials to investigate, suspecting that Hagrid had secretly released it. However, after a fruitless search around the castle and the Forbidden Forest's outskirts, several officials decided to give up and leave, after all, no one really cared about the fate of a Hippogriff.

Upon hearing about this, Hermione knew it was Soren's doing and specifically sent a thank-you card to him. Although the card only said "thank you," Soren understood that cautious Hermione didn't want to reveal too much information about the incident.

Soren was more concerned about Professor Lupin turning into a werewolf.

He knew that Professor Lupin took the werewolf potion prepared by Snape every month, which was why Dumbledore felt secure about him teaching at the school without posing a danger to the students. Moreover, the early appearance of the black Dog was also very suspicious.

Connecting the two incidents, it wasn't difficult to guess that Wormtail might have tampered with the werewolf potion, timing the situation perfectly to lure Black into an encounter with the werewolf Lupin.

Generally speaking, werewolves do not attack Animagi, but Black should be an exception. Given Lupin's hatred for Black, even as a werewolf, he would instinctively attack due to the subconscious hatred. With this in mind, the entire situation made sense.

Soren did not know what caused the deviation from the original plot, but he didn't care much about it. He had already decided to rely on his own strength to face Voldemort— that guy was bound to return, whether Wormtail was involved or not, the outcome would probably be the same.

However, he needed to remind himself not to rely too much on the benefits of knowing the plot, or trouble would eventually arise.

February came to an end.

The first Saturday in March was the Quidditch match between Slytherin and Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff, having no hope of winning the championship, seemed to have lost their fighting spirit in this match and was crushed by Slytherin—Draco caught the Golden Snitch while Slytherin was leading by 100 points.

This gave Slytherin a record of two wins, accumulating a net score of 300 points, leading second-place Gryffindor by 200 points. This meant that if Gryffindor wanted to win the championship, they had to defeat Slytherin by a net score of 210, which was nearly an impossible task!

In the original story, nothing happened in March. Soren, who thought he would spend March uneventfully, unexpectedly received a letter that took him by surprise.

The letter contained only a location and time, with no signature, but it had a drawing of a scarab. Soren had already guessed the identity of the letter writer.

At midnight, Soren cast the Invisibility Charm on himself and secretly left the castle to meet the person who had summoned him at the edge of the Forbidden Forest—7th-year head girl Gemma Farley.

In the dense forest, Gemma stood alone in the shadow of a tree. In the darkness, Soren couldn't see her expression, but for her to go through such trouble to summon him at this late hour clearly couldn't be for trivial matters, and it certainly wasn't to meet him for a secret rendezvous— okay, that last thought was just Soren overthinking.

Gemma was very alert. As Soren approached, she had already raised her wand and softly said, "Who is it?"

"Don't be nervous, it's me," Soren replied in a low voice, and only then did Gemma lower her wand. "What's going on? It's the middle of the night, and you're acting so mysterious," Soren's eyes rolled mischievously, and on a whim, he teased her, "Gemma, you're not really planning to have a secret meeting with me here, are you?"

Gemma seemed to have lost her sense of humor and did not respond to Soren's teasing, instead wearing a serious expression. She furrowed her brow as if organizing her thoughts before finally saying, "Soren, have you heard of the student organization called 'Ghost Society'?"

Soren thought for a moment and shook his head, "I haven't heard of it. What's the issue?"

Gemma explained, "Then—what about the 'Knights of Walpurgis'?"

Soren usually wore a confident, carefree expression, but at this moment, he also had to frown. "You mean the predecessor of the Death Eaters?"

Gemma nodded, "That's the organization. Most people believe it was founded by a mysterious figure during their student years, with the goal of recruiting at Hogwarts, allowing graduates to join the Death Eaters. However, in fact, the name 'Knights of Walpurgis' has a much older origin, dating back to another Dark Lord, Grindelwald... It's an organization that fervently believes in 'pure-blood supremacy' and has taken on a somewhat religious nature. Its members come from the oldest pure-blood families across various European countries. When Grindelwald rose, this organization sent people to join and strengthen them..."

Soren connected the dots, "So, when Grindelwald fell, the Knights of Walpurgis returned to hiding until the dark lord rose again, sending people to join the Death Eaters? That means both Dark Lords were manipulated?"

Gemma nodded gravely, and both fell into a momentary silence.

Soren swallowed, moistening his somewhat dry throat, then asked, "So—what does this Knights of Walpurgis have to do with the Ghost Society you wanted to talk about?"

"When the dark lord was recruiting at Hogwarts, they used the name Knights of Walpurgis. Perhaps they felt this name didn't match their terror, so after graduation, they named their own faction the Death Eaters. However, the name Knights of Walpurgis lived on at Hogwarts, becoming a code name for a mysterious underground student organization. Under the pressure from former headmasters Armando Dippet and Albus Dumbledore, this organization appeared to have disbanded but actually survived in secret, merely changing its name to Ghost Society, becoming even more low-key and mysterious."

"So you could say that the Knights of Walpurgis were the predecessor of the Ghost Society. However, the membership of the Ghost Society is much more selective, and they are even stricter about secrecy. As far as I know, they now only recruit students in their fifth year and above, and only those with excellent academic records and from pure-blood families are invited... Joining the Ghost Society will grant you personal guidance from the leader and immense power."

Soren nodded, understanding that it was essentially a student organization dedicated to studying and spreading dark magic, luring students into corruption using the power of dark magic, leading them down the path the organization had planned, such as becoming potential dark lords or potential Death Eaters.

However, for some reason, a bad premonition suddenly arose in Soren's heart. Gemma talking to him about these matters meant it was certainly related to him. Coupled with his efforts over the past two semesters to recruit half-blood and Muggle-born wizards, it wasn't hard to imagine that the fanatical Ghost Society, obsessed with 'pure-blood supremacy,' wanted to deal with him.

Just as he was about to confirm this, he found something wasn't quite right, and the ominous feeling grew stronger. "Gemma, since this organization is as mysterious as you say, how did you come to know about it? Could it be that..."

Gemma finally showed a hint of bitterness on her face and nodded, "You guessed correctly. I am one of the members of the Ghost Society. Your actions in Slytherin have already infringed upon the interests of the pure-blood hardliners. Someone reached out to our leader, sending someone to deal with you, and that person is me!"
