The Flying Kite

Ermias had picked up Nia from the shore where I am seated with Deon while she was trying to cross to the other side of the road when I had caught her spying on us. She was confused by the situation, yet she was eager to see me. I had been standing on the pavement of the street, wondering what she might be doing or thinking about as she drove off with Ermias. It really broke me the more, as I see the woman of my life and yet can't do anything about. That feeling of helplessness is one thing that weakens me to the core.

Ermias had tried engaging Nia in a conversation, but she seems not to pay any attention to all that he was saying. He abruptly asked what was wrong with her and still thinking Nia is angry at him because of his mistress. 

"What happened today, you seen a bit nervous. Or did you meet with Banu", Ermias asked.

"Ermias, please don't start again. I am too tired to argue with you right now", Nia replied.

Ermias is still thinking that Nia is angry because she got jealous of him after meeting with his mistress, but he has no idea of whom she is worried about. She is worried and sad because she could not get to talk to me. We were really close to getting to each other until Ermias made his unexpected entrance to our scene.

I had gone back to Deon and told him that I would like to take my leave now since my days in the city are numbered. I also told Deon I that I just want to spend some more time with my family but my final return to the company's headquarters. Deon knew I was leaving because I had seen Nia, and he also had something of greater importance to tell me. It was about his relationship with my sister and himself, but due to the circumstances at hand, it would not be logical of him to bring that on board. It will surely breed up more serious circumstance between us and I wasn't ready for all that. Without hesitation, Deon agreed as he excused me to take my leave.

Ermias and Nia had reached home as Nia immediately took the lead heading to their bedroom. Ermias quickly followed as he trapped his hands into hers and they both walked to the garden of the house, as it is the place all the family are gathered. They immediately start to put on the show of a happy couple yet none of them seem happy. Ermias had already sent some portraits of himself and his wife, to be displayed during the ceremony. Nia's mother has been waiting al these while in the sitting hall for them, as she began to get excited upon seeing them. Nia's father was nowhere to be found as he cared less of the ceremony. He was already aware of his daughter's unhappiness in the marriage, yet someone needs to pay the cost of what the brother did.

Nia had decided to work in her own separate room, so as Ermias. He had requested that no one should disturb him since he would be working through out the night. Nia also informed everyone not to be a bother to her as she would be working as well. She was still working on the portrait she had drawn of me and wanted to complete it. She had been hiding it all these years. She had thought she would never see me again until this night. I could not stand the thought of her not explains to me of the reason why she had to dump me for Ermias and as I was furious about this, I went straight to her house and watched her fro her room. She stepped out to see if I was really the one standing there then I appeared behind her. 

"Why were you at the shore today?", I asked her.

"Because I miss you", she replied to me.

"Then why did you run away", I asked again.

"Is it that you were scared of how I was going to meet up with you, or you just couldn't gather the courage to face me and explain to me why you had to abandon me", I added.

"I wish I you say everything to you, and I know you'd understand if I had said it to you", she also added.

At this point, I begun feeling more furious as I couldn't wait any longer to hear the excuse she had for me. I had waited all these years just for this particular moment and yet nothing to go home with. I held her really close to me and asked what if the love is no more there but just hatred and resentment. She softly replied that she still loves me and will always do. As our conversation kept going to-and-fro, a voiced calling out her name came through from her bedroom. As she turned to to answer to the person calling out her name I vanished from her site. All these were happening in her dreams, and I was not there. She woke up from her dumber and answered to her husband who had come to wake her up because it was morning. 

Ermias entered her room for a quick inspection. He had been suspecting her of drawing a portrait of a different man other than her, but as smart as she is, she tries to always be a step ahead of him. He warned her not to ever lock her room again then left with his father-Inlaw for an important morning meeting. 

Years back, I had thought Nia how to fly a kite. It had been my symbol of signal whenever I wanted to meet up with her and has always worked. She had seen a kite flying in the sky that particular morning and immediately thought I was the same person signaling to her to meet up. It was disappointing to her that she only met two children playing with the same kite we used to fly years back, at it has falling and no one had picked it up until this very morning. She could not believe that she had been fooled with a kite and starts to abuse herself as she walk back home, shamefully.

As Nia was heading home all shameful and in tears, she came across Layla who was feeding some stray cats on the road. Layla could not wonder the kind of tragedy she had been through. Layla could not bear it but stop her and give her the hug she truly needed. Layla then took Nia to her place to solitude her with more comfort. 

Layla continued to ask of why she has chosen to punish herself by being with a man she barely stands and does not even love yet decided to abandon the one person who has always had her in his heart. She also told Layla that if am around her life is likely to come to a standstill because she wouldn't be able to continue with it without me. They both practiced seeing what she would do if I was to be standing right before her. The only thing she continued saying was for me to go away, that she feels me right in her heart and it will probably stop beating if I am to be around and she can not come anywhere e close to me. Her situation is really serious as Layla could not know what else to say to her. Layla had also advised her to go for who ever she thinks makes her happy, but will her conditions change because of that.
