Robert instinctively sought to shield her. "Mom, please stop with these absurd ideas. Angeline gave her approval for her to stay."

"What's that? Angeline agreed?" Irene's expression soured instantly. She turned to her son. "You're finished, Robert. It's clear Angel no longer cares for you. She must have given up on your relationship."

Robert looked puzzled. "Mom, what are you implying?"

Irene, however, saw right through it and gave a cold, knowing smile. "My dear boy, you don't grasp how women think. In matters of the heart, everyone acts in their own interest. No woman wants to share her husband with another. She was so adamant before, refusing to accept your involvement with Rebecca. Now she suddenly agrees? Doesn't that strike you as odd?"

"What's strange about it?" Robert said dismissively. "It simply means Angeline had a change of heart and became more understanding, Mom."

Irene let out a humorless laugh. "Oh, how mistaken you are, my son."
